For me, skincare has always been very personal. I became an esthetician to heal myself. That meant healing my acne prone skin. This snow balled into lifestyle changes aimed at healing my body as a whole- both physically and then mentally. (I am still working on this, health is an everyday thing!) With my esthetics background, I knew I wanted to work in the skincare realm in some capacity but I also always knew I’d have to work for myself. The thoughts, ideas and beliefs I have about caring for our skin always seemed to be a bit different than the mainstream and I never wanted to settle or conform. I’d always been a bit turned off by the cost- money and time- of the traditional skincare routine. Just call me a skincare renegade...
There has always been a part of me that wanted to do more- more than just make good skincare. I knew I wanted to give back to organizations and causes that matter to me and have helped to shape me.
You know when people ask you “If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?” Well, since I was a kid, I’ve always said “Go on a trip around the world...and then come home and start an animal sanctuary.” Even as a child, I have always wanted to be around neglected, used, or abused animals. I wanted to give back to animals what they’ve given me in my lifetime. And this extended to all animals, not only animals we view as typical pets. I asked myself "if I had to kill the animal myself in order to eat it, would I?". The answer is an easy "No." and so I knew it was wrong to pay others to do it for me. The more I began to pull back the curtain and learn about animal agriculture the more I realized animals need our help.
As I allowed my eyes to open to the atrocities of animal agriculture, I quickly continued to learn that not only animal lives were at stake, but human lives as well. Factory farms and slaughterhouse are disproportionately located in low income and communities of color causing physical illness and emotional strain, all so I could have bacon for breakfast :( Slaughterhouse workers are paid low wages, often having no other job prospects. To add to this, they report high physical risks and experience serious psychological distress (SPD).
I knew I had to take a stand and align my actions with my values. Not paying for environmental racism and abuse by living a fully vegan lifestyle was the first step for me. Creating a company that could assist by donating a portion of sales to the amazing people who are on the ground working directly in the communities to stop the injustice was the second step. Myself, as well as Pig & Flower as a company, is a work in progress. I am always open to learning, open to being wrong and open to growth.
At Pig & Flower, we believe veganism to be a movement based in compassion. We aim to exclude, as far as is possible and practical, exploitation and cruelty to animals, humans and our planet.
My company, Pig & Flower, has a twofold mission. One is to support you in taking care of your one and only sanctuary, the important organ that houses the rest of your beautiful being. Two is to give back to animal, human rights and environmental causes that are in many ways negatively affecting our collective sanctuary, our planet.
The skincare industry, and the beauty industry as a whole, is not about making yourself “better”. It’s about treating yourself like the beautiful person you ARE. It's about realizing that you are already worth taking care of.
Pig & Flower is my way of marrying my devotion to compassion towards others with the importance of self care. It's a way to make your buying decision easy when, like me, you care about your skin health and about giving back. Because really, who doesn’t want to buy a high-quality product that also helps animals?
